Cabanas

Situated just 7km from Casa Verdazul guesthouse is the anchient fishing city of Tavira, which used to be th main trading port in the Algarve during the 16th to 18th centuries. Tavira has not been influenced by mass tourism, and today it still maintains it's historic beauty and charm.
Visitors can enjoy the picturesque setting alomg the Gilão River from one of the many cafes along the river front. The seven arch Tavira Bridge spans the river and at low tide you can see the fishermen searching for clams in the shallow water.

Tavira arguably has some of the finest churches in the Algarve and they are plentiful too, in fact there are more than 20 in and around the town!
If you are interested in the architectural heritage of Tavira, you will discover some lovely, quite grand, buildings reflecting it's wealthy past particularly around the Praça da República area and then typical rows of Portuguese 'town' houses with tiled fronts along narrow cobbled streets; shops to browse in; pretty gardens and squares to sit in and, of course, plenty of restaurants and cafes for refreshments!
There are lots of delightful places to explore around Tavira starting with the pretty town of Cabanas just to the east. The view across the sheltered lagoon of the Ria Formosa to the ilha beach is idyllic and there is nothing more relaxing than sitting at one of the pavement cafes along the waterfront with a glass of chilled wine!
